Basic Functions of Parameter Intercomparison in Giovanni

FunctionDescription
Area plot of time averaged parameters:Displays a time-averaged data plot for selected parameters and spatial area. The plot for the first selected parameter is color shaded and the second is contoured. If the beginning and end times are identical, no time average will be taken. This function allows geographical intercomparison between two parameters.
Area plot of time averaged difference:Displays a time-averaged difference for selected parameters and spatial area. If the beginning and end times are identical, no time average will be taken.
Time Plot of area averaged parameters:Displays an X-Y data plot, where X denotes time and Y the data averaged over the selected spatial area or at a single grid point. GrADS function "aave", the area weighted arithmetic mean method, is used to calculate the area mean. This function allows the generation of a time-series plot for up to three parameters. For ASCII output, there is no limit to the number of parameters selected.
Time Plot of area averaged difference:Displays an X-Y data plot, where X denotes time and Y the difference of selected parameters averaged over the selected spatial area or at a single grid point. GrADS function "aave", the area weighted arithmetic mean method, is used to calculate the area mean. This function allows for the examination of the time series differences between two parameters.
Scatter plot of parameters in selected area and time period:Displays a scatter plot of all values of the two parameters for a selected area and time range. This function allows for the examination of the relationship between two parameters geographically. The axis is in log scaling if the parameters "Chlorophyll a concentration" or "Diffuse attenuation coefficient at 490nm" are selected.
Scatter plot of area averaged parameters:Displays a scatter plot of parameter values either averaged over a selected spatial area or at a single grid point within a given time range. This function allows for the examination of the regional (spatially averaged) relationship between two parameters.
Temporal correlation map:Displays a geographical view of correlation coefficient for a pair of selected parameters. For each grid point in a selected spatial area, the correlation coefficient (lag = 0, ranging from -1 to 1) is computed temporally over a specified time length using the standard formula. This function allows the examination of the relationship between two parameters at each grid point in the selected spatial area.
Temporal correlation of area averaged parameters:Displays a single value of the correlation coefficient for a pair of selected parameters. For a given grid point or spatial area where the selected parameters are averaged, the correlation coefficient (lag = 0, ranging from -1 to 1) is computed temporally over a specified time length using the standard formula. This function allows the examination of the point or regional relationship between two parameters.

Color Options for Area Plot

OptionDescription
Pre-defined:Uses the color palette with the pre-specified default range of assigned values. This may be a linear or logarithmic scale palette.
Dynamic:Uses the minimum and maximum values of the data product in the specified area to create a linear scale color palette.
Customized:Allows user specification of minimum and maximum values for the color palette. A linear scale color palette will be created based on these minimum and maximum values.

Y-Axis Options for Time Plots

Dynamic:Dynamically sets the minimum, maximum, and interval values for the Time Plot Y-axis.
Customized:Allows user to specify the minimum, maximum, and interval values for the Time Plot Y-axis.

Resolution Options for Area ASCII Outputs

This pull-down menu provides 11 resolution options for Area ASCII outputs. Please note that the original data is in Equidistant Cylindrical Map Projection with Latitude/Longitude steps of 0.0878906 degrees. Currently, the output resolutions available are 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, and 5.0 degrees. For a given resolution selection, the program steps through each of the possible lat/lon, lon/time or lat/time points, and sets each point value to be the same as that of the nearest original resolution point.
